On Sunday, Sept. Hyannis Open Streets is back! You can watch a demonstration of jijitsu or marvel at the skills of talented stilt walkers. Over on the Village Green, the ever-popular kids zone will feature a giant open-air slide, fun games, and — new this year — a kids karaoke on the bandstand stage. Many restaurants and stores along Main Street will be open Sunday, and some will have special offers reflecting the spirit of the day.
Hyannis Open Streets is all about getting out and about. Everyone is welcome to this barrier-free celebration of movement. Although parking will be banned on Main Street, there will be plenty of free spaces nearby, on North and South streets and at the Hyannis Transportation Center. The next scheduled Hyannis Open Streets is set for Oct.
This achievement celebrates businesses that consistently deliver fantastic experiences to travelers around the globe, having earned great traveler reviews on Tripadvisor over the last 12 months. As challenging as the past year was, Main Street Hyannis stood out by continuously delighting travelers.
What has impressed me is how businesses adapted to these challenges, implementing new cleanliness measures, adding social distancing guidelines, and utilizing technology to prioritize guest safety. Based on a full year of reviews from customers, this award speaks to the great service and experience you provided guests in the midst of a pandemic. The ongoing health crisis has required hard work and innovation from the business owners of Hyannis Main Street, and the BID has been grateful to receive funds supporting the continuing efforts of everyone on Hyannis Main Street to make Downtown Hyannis a vibrant and dynamic setting for visitors year round.
This grant was deed to help address the particular challenges of the winter amid the ongoing public health crisis. Main Street listened to the community, and has been excited to add to our plantings, decorating the barriers, and building on our maritime themes. These funds were critical in the development of marketing materials for tourists, including up to date maps and event listings. The BID was able to update hyannismainstreet.
These improvements will yield tangible for Hyannis Main Street, with the ability to show stakeholders the increased site traffic resulting from these marketing efforts. Hyannis Main Street was able to bring seven family friendly movies to the Hyannis Village Green during the Summer of These annual summer movies are free to the public, and the Town of Barnstable also provides free movie themed crafts for all of the kids to make before showtime.
Residents and visitors will be delighted as they walk along Main Street and enjoy the sights. There is no annual Hyannis 4th of July parade this year. Boats are invited to line up starting at PM at the marina and the parade enters the Harbor at PM where spectators will find interactive family activities taking place at Aselton Park from PM PM as they cheer on the boaters and enjoy the decorated vessels. Since their formation in , the five piece string band has been fusing diverse musical backgrounds into a sound that bursts at the seams with energy, exuding a pure joy for creating music.
Experimenting with intricate instrumentals and lively originals, their music brings the genre to new and unexpected places. Donations are welcome from individuals and businesses who would like to contribute funds that will make this celebration possible. Grant funds will support various identified public improvements to lighting, wayfinding, pedestrian connectivity, beautification of town-owned public spaces and reduced traffic speeds with a goal to enrich the welcoming environment for residents and visitors to shop, dine, stay and play throughout downtown Hyannis. Building on the success of the Shared Streets and Spaces initiative first launched during the summer of , the Massachusetts Department of Transportation extended the program to help municipalities address the particular challenges of winter amid the ongoing public health crisis.
Shared Winter Streets and Spaces provides cities and towns with grants to improve plazas, sidewalks, curbs, streets, parking areas, and other public spaces in support of public health, safe mobility, and renewed commerce. While we wish our annual Safe Trick or Treat could go on as scheduled, in the interest of public health, the town is discouraging any formal trick or treating this year. We are still looking forward to a fun Halloween weekend on Main Street this year, and are excited to host a Virtual Pumpkin Carving Contest this year! We would love to see everyone come down in their costumes, vote for your favorite pumpkin on Facebook, and enjoy the fall decorations!
We are working hard to make sure Hyannis Main Street is a safe and fun environment for the whole family, and you can be a part of that effort! Dress Up Downtown Part 2 will fund streetscape improvements and create programming for outdoor events along Hyannis Main Street. These funds will go towards buying planters, bunting, and decorative lighting, and will plan events that aim to safely draw visitors to Main Street.
This summer, we were able to host drive-in movies on Main Street, and look forward to bringing more safe, family-friendly events with your help. Thank you to the Town of Barnstable for partnering with us for this effort to add vibrancy to our downtown! We are so thankful for their support and excited about what we can achieve with our own crowdfunding and their matching grant!

Scali, Director Tuesday, June 16, These guidelines will also complement the plans to close one lane of traffic on Main Street as was announced last week.
The guidelines allow for a streamlined approach to a multi-departmental approval. Richard Scali, Licensing Director, and Maggie Flynn, Permit Coordinator, are prescreening the applications for appropriateness and coordinating the plan review.
Scali has been given the approval by the Licensing Authority to administratively review and approve the extension of premises applications with notice to the Licensing Authority and to the Alcohol Beverages Control Commission.
The Governor, through the Legislature, has relaxed the laws by allowing local authorities to approve temporary alcohol extensions of premises which will be in effect until November 1, The Board of Health has also given administrative approval to the Health Director Thomas McKean to review the applications and to allow temporary exemptions to requirements for outdoor dining as appropriate while maintaining public safety. It will allow our restaurants to be open and operating as soon as possible with expansion of existing outside dining or new patios on private or public space or a combination thereof.
The plan is still subject to adjustments as we move forward. Each business has its own special set of circumstances and space limitations. The Cape Cod Resilience Fund will provide direct grants to small business owners on Cape Cod to offer relief from economic damage caused by the Covid pandemic. Virtually overnight, many small businesses on Cape Cod have been devastated by the unforeseen and unprecedented impact of this global pandemic.
Small businesses are the cornerstone, the backbone, the heartbeat of any vibrant community and Cape Cod is no exception — the long-term economic sustainability of our region is tied to the fate of our small businesses. Preference will be given to year-round, community minded, brick and mortar businesses located in a downtown area.
