After getting back from my plans last night around , I decided to get a bite to eat at the pizza place on the corner of santa monica and san vicente.
I sat there till closing hour watching who walked by for the sake of this post. By and large the vast majority of clubgoers were Latino. Latinos truly dominate LA county. Many of the older men out tended to be white too. Young white men are definitely a rarity in West Hollywood nightlife despite the claims that they dominate. I suspect Hollywood Blvd would be a similar breakdown. You can't blame white gay males for the dysfunction and lying of the black "down low" culture. I don't know if it has been mentioned in this thread yet, but my bf, a native angeleno, said there used to be a place in Inglewood called The Caper Room. A search for it only found a mention of it as a "known homosexual bar" in a news story about elder scamming, apparently that was the accused's hangout place.
All this searching around makes me really miss the days of gay coffee shop bookstores, which is apparently what the abbey used to be. We had some really great ones in New Orleans and Houston. That was my first gay cultural experience, finding aisles of interesting re, cards, incense all the rage in the 90's , and people who would just talk to me without loud thumping music or alcohol. Look, beeps, we actually agree on far more than you can see.
I know being a black male is very difficult, being a black gay male is probably the hardest minority to be in the country. I also get that gay male culture is skewed toward an athletic white male as the standard of beauty, far more so than heterosexual culture. So that a black male who is of equal looks to a white counterpart will face far more rejection in comparison. But your opinion about the distribution of nightlife is incorrect.
Blacks do go out a ton as you can personally attest and they get treated, served, and accepted equally in the businesses. If you are a good tipper and have a good attitude you will be fine. I'm Black and gay and I stopped going to weho about 3 years ago for this very reason. Do Black gay men frequent WeHo? Of Course Are these men served drinks? Every poster, gogo dancer, bar tender, server, is White!
So I said to myself "wait a minute I don't even miss it. I do however love Silverlake and Long Beach! I get to see hot Black, Asian, Latin and white men and it doesnt have to be on a deated night AND the music is better. I'm Black and I agree with the original poster. Its not about getting in and getting served.
It is deeper than that, believe it or not. Its always been that way there so I know longer give my money to those bars. Black Gay Clubs in DC prior to The white gay experience is often written about but not much Black Gay History in this country is known. Anything prior to , although current establishments would be welcome also. I would definitely appreciate it.
Nob Hill bar black owned in later years at Kenyon Street NW opened in the 's as a place for black gays. There was a bar on University Ave in San Diego Hillcrest in the late 80's that was dark or at least was on certain nights of the week.
Can't remember the name anymore. There were no condos, shopping centers at least, none you'd actually want to go to , restaurants, etc. In the early 90's it was like someone flicked a switch and everything changed overnight. Of course, now it's a place I wouldn't want to be -- everything's relative Edit: Peacock Alley was the name. Edit: In case any progressive California types decide my use of "dark" is "offensive", it's not meant that way.
My Mexican partner of over 20 yrs would attest to this. But let me say, if you are offended you are probably one of those types who have no rational capabilities and therefore, I could care less.
