2. Tales Mystery Dungeon
Tales, Tales, Tales.. There are so many games that I would like to see with this franchise. Problem is, half of them already happened. 2D Fighter? Happened. Strategy RPG? Happened. Even an MMO of all things happened! But as you might have guessed, none of them ever made it out of Japan. They’re actually the reason I’ve started studying Japanese, especially the Radiant Mythology series. Because I was running short on ideas for this franchise, I did the most logical next thing and came up with another idea that hasn’t happened yet and when it will happen, we won’t get it because Japan. The Mystery Dungeon subgenre of games is a long-running one, starting as early as the SNES with Torneko no Daibōken: Fushigi no Dungeon, a spin-off of the Dragon Quest series. Most people may recognize the success that the Pokémon series had more recently, or even the Chocobo games. They have a roguelike style of gameplay, with grid-based combat through many different randomized floors. While not necessarily having the best gameplay, the roguelike element is the most interesting element of this genre. Or in Pokémon’s case, the tear-jerking story. I could see it work with how Tales characters attack, as they can attack from both a distance and from close-up, whoever it may be. The dungeons could also have a design- or references towards older Tales games, as the franchise loves its crossovers with itself. Or they could probably even go the mascot way like Final Fantasy did with Chocobo. Though originally I saw the chances of this happening pretty big, the Tales franchise in general has been relatively quiet as of late. We got Tales of Vesperia Definitive Edition, and a title is currently in the works but that’s it. And they’re still focussing hard on mobile games which.. just stop it already, please.
1. Final Fantasy Warriors
Of all the games on here, this is legitimately the one that surprises me the most as to why it doesn’t exist yet. Many franchises have collaborated with the (Dynasty) Warriors/Musou genre of games. Nintendo was interested and allowed two Warriors games to be made for both the Legend of Zelda and Fire Emblem series. Several anime like Arslan Senki, One Piece and Berserk took their shot at it, and then there’s of course Senran Kagura which took it’s own spin on the idea.. for better or worse. Lastly, two of the three JRPG kings in Japan also have their Warriors game counterparts, being Dragon Quest and the Japanese exclusive game that we’ll never get, Tales of the Heroes: Twin Brave. Who is the remaining JRPG king? You guessed it: Final Fantasy. And truthfully, it would probably be the franchise that would work with this gameplay the best out of all of them. Dissidia Final Fantasy on the PSP has proven that a crossover with all the mainline Final Fantasy games can work really well, and I can imagine that being the case here as well as all the characters play very differently from each other despite most being swordsmen. Hell, they could literally grab the movesets from the original Dissidia games and throw the characters right in there, that’s how well they fit. In my viewpoint, it would be a game similar in structure to Dissidia, with many areas and references to the mainline games. The main plot would probably be good versus evil again–big surprise, I know–but that would be satisfying enough for this game. If would be cool if we got two storylines however: one focusing on the protagonists and one of the antagonists. After all, I want all the villains to be playable as well so I don’t want them to focus on just the protagonists. Everything else would exactly be how a Warriors game is structured: large open spaces with objectives to accomplish and hundreds of monsters to slay, gear to find and create, and overall just a ton of fun. If there is one game on this list that I absolutely want to see, it’s definitely Final Fantasy Warriors. Oh and for the people wondering why I didn’t put anything Final Fantasy VI related here.. I don’t trust the current Square Enix to touch one of my favourite games of all time.
Thank you for reading! I had a lot of fun making this list and coming up with ideas. Truthfully, I have a lot more games in mind that I would like to see, especially other franchises that I would like to see crossover with the Warriors games. I might actually make another list based on that idea somewhere in the future! And who knows, maybe if I brainstorm enough I can come up with more games that are not necessarily crossovers with other games. Therefore there are no honourable mentions because y’know, potential spoilers. Let me know what games you would like to see in the comments down below, and I hope to see you next time!
